How does acupuncture work?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an approach to health that looks to achieve internal equilibrium of the body's energy, known as Qi, and balance of Yin and Yang, which are equal and opposite qualities of Qi. This is achieved by the insertion of fine needles into the meridians (channels) that the acupuncturist can use to stimulate the body's own healing response. See acupuncture for more details.

What conditions can be treated?
Acupuncture can help to treat a variety of specific aliments, however many people with no specific symptoms use acupuncture to maintain health, promote well being, and to reduce the stress caused by day to day life. Having acupuncture treatments on a regular basis can help to prevent to onset of illness, and thus increase quality of life. See application for more details.

Which governing body are you registered with?
I am on the British Register of Complementary Practitioners (BRCP), which is administrated by the Institute for Complementary Medicine (ICM).

What happens at an acupuncture treatment?
At the initial consultation we will discuss your health situation and associated concerns and l will ask you related questions to get an overall view of your health. I will make a TCM diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan. At this point we can discuss how many treatments you may be need. You will be able to ask questions about your treatment and to voice any concerns you may have.

How long does an acupuncture treatment take?
The initial consultation takes approximately 1 hour and following treatments 45-50 minutes.

Is acupuncture safe?
Yes. I always use disposable needles and follow the health and safety guidelines set out by the Local Health & Safety Authority.

How will I feel after an acupuncture treatment?
After acupuncture treatments, people often speak of feeling calmer and more together. It can be a very relaxing experience and some patients have talked of acupuncture as ‘an antidote’ to the stresses of modern living.
